5 ways to raise a capable little helper
- Give them a real job — carrying napkins to the table or feeding the pet builds genuine pride.
- Make it reachable — a low coat hook or a step stool at the sink; independence needs access.
- Let them pour — a small jug of water and the odd spill is exactly how careful hands are made.
- Slow down and let them try — buttons and zips take time, and the wobble is the learning.
- Praise the effort — “you worked so hard at that” keeps them trying more than “good job.”
Every small job they do themselves is a quiet “I can!” that lasts far longer than a tidy room.
